Reducing Disability ~ Fun Exercise Program for HOME!
The Greater East Ohio Area Alzheimers Association has joined with the Ohio Department of Aging and the Benjamin Rose Institute to implement a free program that will help both individuals with memory problems as well as their family members who are caring for them. This program is being funded by a grant from the Administration on Aging. This new program is called Reducing Disability in Alzheimers Disease (RDAD).
The RDAD program is designed to help teach older adults who may suffer from memory problems how to do some simple exercises to improve their overall health. The program also teaches family members about symptoms to watch for and how to care for persons with memory problems. This program hopes to improve the ability of the person with memory problems to carry out activities of daily living while also helping family members provide assistance to their relative.
A specially trained professional will come to your home for 16 sessions, each session lasting about one hour to teach exercises to the person with memory problems to help improve strength and balance and trained professionals will also teach family members how to assist their relative with these exercises. Family members will also be asked to keep a record of their relatives exercise progress and to complete four brief surveys about the sessions that will be mailed back to the Benjamin Rose Institute.
All information will be kept completely confidential. Participation in this program is completely voluntary, deciding to stop participating in the program will in no way affect any services that you receive or may receive from the participating organizations.
For more information, you, a family member or friend can call the Greater East Ohio Area Alzheimers Association at (330) 864-5646 or 1-800-272-3900.
Heart Attack Warning Signs
Mercy encourages the community to know what to do if you or a loved one develops the warning signs of a possible heart attack.
Do you know the signs of a heart attack? Do you know what to do if you or a loved one exhibited any of the below symptoms:
Men: any kind of chest discomfort, shortness of breath, indigestion, upper abdominal pain, shoulder or arm pain, jaw pain, pain between shoulder blades.
Women: any kind of chest discomfort, shortness of breath, weakness and/or unusual fatigue, cold sweats, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, shoulder or arm pain, hot flashes, heart racing sensation.
If you or a loved one experience any of the above symptoms, dont hesitate, call 9-1-1 and get them medical attention immediately. Cardiovascular disease, which continues to be the leading cause of mortality among men and women in the United States, claims more than 2.5 million deaths annually including 600,000 that directly result from heart attacks.
Dont delay because you are unsure, afraid or think it will go away, because it may not. If you are suffering the above symptoms, do not attempt to drive or transport yourself to a medical facility, instead call 9-1-1 and seek medical help immediately. Fast treatment will minimize heart damage and speed recovery.
Alert
On the way to Canton, driving on Michigan Avenue, on Thursday morning, I saw an infant car seat on the side of the road with a blanket draped over it. I did not stop, even though I had all kinds of thoughts running through my head. But when I got to my destination, I called the Canton PD and they were going to check it out. This is what I was told...
"Several things to be aware of... gangs and thieves, are now plotting different ways to get a person to "stop" their vehicle.
"There is a gang initiation reported by the local police department that gangs are placing a car seat by the road... with a fake baby in it... waiting for a woman, of course, to stop and check on the baby. Note that the location of this car seat will usually be beside a wooded or grassy (field) area... and the person - woman - will be dragged into the woods - beaten and raped - usually left for dead. DO NOT STOP. DIAL 9-1-1 AND REPORT WHAT YOU SAW.
"If you are driving at night and eggs are thrown at your windshield. DO NOT OPERATE YOUR WINDSHIELD. DO NOT OPERATE THE WIPER AND DO NOT SPRAY ANY WATER BECAUSE EGGS MIXED WITH WATER BECOME MILKY AND BLOCK YOUR VISION UP TO 92.5%. You are then forced to stop beside the road and become victims of the thieves. This is a new technique used by gangs. Please inform your friends and relatives. These are desperate times and these unsavory individuals will take desperate measures to get what they want.
