On Tuesday, May 8, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, children are invited to come to the Massillon Public Library to “sit, stay, and read” to patient and furry listeners.

Certified therapy dog volunteers visit our library every month and allow children to pet and read to their dogs. It has been observed over and over again that children’s reading abilities improve as they gain confidence from reading to dogs.

The May Paws to Read program will be the last session until after the summer break. This free program, held in the library’s auditorium, requires no registration. For more information, please call the Massillon Public Library’s Children’s Department at 330-832-5037 or log onto the library’s website: www.massillonlibrary.org. History Group Salutes the Red, White, and Blue
In anticipation of Memorial Day, the Massillon Museum’s History Discussion Group’s May topic will be ”Parades and Patriotic Celebrations.”

The Massillon Museum’s History Discussion Group will talk about neighborhood holiday bicycle parades, the Memorial Day ceremony at Massillon Cemetery, the sham battle in SouthSippo Park, patriotic parades, favorite fireworks, Fourth of July picnics, and similar celebrations during its monthly session at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 1.

Participants are invited to bring memories, photographs, or memorabilia. Many participants enjoy reminiscing, while others simply enjoy listening.

The History Group meets on the first Tuesday of every month from 10:00 a.m. until noon to chat casually about a pre-announced topic, usually a narrow segment of Massillon history. The June subject will be “Local Aviation.”

The “Massillon Remembers” group is free and open to everyone; new participants are welcome at any time. Some people come to every session; others attend when the topic is of particular interest. No reservations are required. Coffee and doughnuts are available for a donation. Chris Craft moderates the sessions.

Organic Lawn Care For the Cheap and Lazy

Healthy Kids Day
On April 28, the YMCA of Western Stark County is celebrating Healthy Kids Day® with a free community event at the Towpath Trail YMCA for kids and families in Western Stark County. More than 1,900 Ys across the country are taking part in the celebration, meant to kick start physical activity and learning throughout the summer – a critical out-of-school time for kids.

Healthy Kids Day, a national initiative of the Y to improve the health and well-being of kids, is filled with fun, active play and educational activities that will help parents improve their kids’ lifestyles for the long term. Research shows that without access to activities that stimulate the mind and body, kids are more prone to gain weight and fall behind academically over the summer months.

Fun, fun, fun: Healthy Kids Day will feature activities such as Zumbatomic®, a magic show, a kids challenge course, healthy snacks, a karate demonstration, and several other events and activities.

Parent Resources: Healthy Kids Day will host representatives from Massillon Chiropractic, the Massillon Museum, the Massillon Library, the Canal Fulton Lion’s Club, Affinity Medical Center, and Hear Inc., who will be providing screenings and fun activities along with the Y staff.

Free: This event is free and open to the public at the Towpath Trail YMCA, April 28th from 10am until 2pm.

Why Should You Attend?
A leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, the Y holds Healthy Kids Day to teach healthy habits and inspire a lifetime love of physical activity through active play. As part of this initiative, the Y – along with hundreds of thousands of parents and kids nationwide – is taking on summer by addressing critical gaps in health and education that cause kids to be at risk for childhood obesity and suffer summer learning loss.

Healthy Kids Day 2012 will be held at the Towpath Trail YMCA, 1226 Market St NE, Navarre, OH, from 10 am to 2 pm FREE to all. For more information look us up online at www.WestStarkY.org.

Fairless Senior Citizens
Our opening thought of the day was: You can close your eyes to reality, but not your memories.

Did you ever wonder why we always ask the question, "How old are you?"
I guess it is because we never grow younger, we always grow older.

HOW OLD ARE YOU?
Age is a quality of the mind:
If you have left your dreams behind,
If hope is cold;
If you no longer look ahead,
If your ambition's fires are dead-
THEN YOU ARE OLD.

But if from life, you take the best,
And if in life, you keep the jest,
If love you hold;
No matter how the years go by,
No matter how the birthdays fly-
YOU ARE NOT OLD. (h.s.fritsch)

On April 19, 2012-forty-five Fairless Senior Citizens gathered in the Fairless High School auditorium for their monthly meeting. We were welcomed by high school principle Dr. Larry Chambliss, who briefed us on how well the students are doing in the spring sporting events.

We were then introduced to treasurer Mark Philips, who proceded to tell us, that we would probably be seeing a levy on the fall ballot. If the levy is placed on the November ballot, it would likely exceed 6-mills, as 6-mills only accounts for the loss in state funding. Additional millage will be needed for: Capital outlay purchases-Inflationary increases-Reinstating any of the cuts previously made - and starting new programs and offerings.

Our guest minister for our meeting was Pastor Larry Patterson from the "Brewster Baptist Church" in Brewster. Pastor Patterson gave our opening prayer and said table grace before our luncheon. Pastor Patterson is also a former Fairless High School Graduate.

We recognized student Madison Weber for being inducted into the Canton YMCA Women's Hall of Fame. She was nominated by Principle Mike Hearn for this award. Madison was also crowned as the Ohio Fairs Queen earlier this year.

We also recognized one of our members and secretary of our group Judy Rentsch from the Beach City Pythians Sisters Temple #282 awarding a check to member Denny Brahler to be used for the Fairless Food Cupboard.

A thank you note was sent to the Dolly Madison House in Brewster, for providing our March dessert for us.

As a gift to the students, our group decided to purchase another bench for the students from Keim Lumber in Charm, Ohio. Inscription on the bench will read--Fairless Senior Citizens to Students----We Wish You Student Success.

Our sunshine list consisted of: Dona Miller and Betty Keller-Norris.

President Jack Evans read the Special Days in April--Happy Easter--Give and Do and several small quips.

Entertainment for our portion of the meeting were the introduction of our spring senior athletes. These included 4 softball senior students, 3 girls track senior students, 3 boys track senior students and 9 baseball senior students. These students introduced themselves and told us what they will be doing in the fall.

We also enjoyed some performances from the annual talent show. They were Erica Cope on the piano singing "Tonight": Kady Burcaw-Isabelle Soehnlen--Laura Schmucki who sang "Sparks Fly" and Rusty Jones--Mitchell Kimball--Jake Buckridge known as "Taters United" played "Foxy Lady and Purple Haze".

The spring luncheon tables in the cafeteria were decorated by the Fairless High School Student Council. As favors they gave each member a "Johney Jump-Up" flower to be planted in their flower garden. Center pieces consisted of assorted spring flowers in a basket type container and these were given as door prizes. We were served our lunch and drinks by the students, who also had the chore of cleaning up after our luncheon. THANK YOU STUDENTS.

Our closing thought was "The more things you do, the more you can do. (Lucille Ball)

Our next meeting will be May 3, 2012 in the Fairless High School Auditorium at 12:00 o’clock noon. Reservations or cancellations should be made no later than May 1, 2012 by calling President Jack Evans at 330-879-2206.

Lawman-turned –author Christopher Rudy has been a law enforcement officer over 30 years, with more than half that time involved in criminal investigation. George Davis, Police and Fire reporter/editor is an award-winning journalist, who spent 42 years full time in the newspaper business before retiring. These two long-time friends teamed up to write this book, tracing major events involving one of the most intriguing and disturbing crime sagas, spanning three decades.

Come hear information developed from interviews with more than two dozen people who had a part in this investigation that eventually led to William E. Griffith, Jr.’s conviction. The book also contains highlights from conversations with three of Griffith’s former wives. Hear details about the case against Griffith, unique in the annals of Stark County Criminal Justice, since it was the first DNA case in the county’s rich history of criminal activity. According to the authors, “In our memory, there has never been another criminal whose activities devastated so many women, families and friends as William E. Griffith’s reign of terror wrought.”

“The twists and turns that led to Griffith’s unmasking, capture and conviction are haunting and remarkable,” remarks Griffith’s chief nemesis, Christopher Rudy, as told to long-time investigative reporter and author George Davis.
